Hezekiah was my great-grandfather's name. I like the name, but...I realize it is a bit strange. I really like the nickname "Hezzie" - but at the same time, I'm not so sure "Hezzie" would like his name.

Its a name I've played with on and off, imagining my (some day) son with this name. It is certainly different (these days, different seems to be good when it comes to naming children) - I am certain he wouldn't have any other kids in his class with his name. I have noticed that unusual names are as a whole far more accepted these days. Kids just seem to take in stride that they have friends with unusual names. I grew up hating my name (it was unusual as well) - but now I kind of like that I never have to say my last name - people know who I am just by hearing my first name because no one else has my name.
Pros - 1) its a name NO ONE else will have, so he'll certainly own it. and 2) it is a family name
Cons - 1)its unusual, so it may be fodder for teasing. What do you think?

Well, if a kid is going to get teased, he'll be teased even if his name is Bill.

Hezekiah is off the charts unusual, but it is a real name with history *and* family ties, so I'd use it.

One suggestion, though - nickname him Ky instead of Hezzie.

Call him "Kiah" instead of Hezzie, and he'll be OK.

I used to be one of 37 people in the phone book with the same name. I never got phone calls, because nobody could figure out which one was me. And I once spent the night in jail waiting for things to be straightened out because someone with the same name who *previously* lived at the same address wrote a bad check. Not the end of the world, but not fun, either.

I think it's a yucky, way too old name. Sounds like something biblical or strangely religious. It may be in vogue with adults (this year, right now) to choose unusual names, but the kids are not appreciative. They are teased by their peers constantly and kids can be really mean.

Remember how much you hated your name and don't do this to your child. Tell him some day what you thought of calling him and let him thank you with all his heart you didn't choose that awful name for him!

Please, please don't do this to a perfectly good kid.

I LOVE IT!! I love names like:
Ezekiel
Nathaniel
Zachariah
Xavier

I would stick with the nickname Kiah, though, it's more modern. So, if he doesn't want to go by Hexekiah or Hezzie, he can go by Kiah. Now that, it Cool. with a capital C.

Jon Hezekiah
He can go by Jon is school, and friends
You and the family call him Hezzie

This way he has a name he can use
When he is an adult, if he loves Hezekiah, he could go by
J. Hezekiah

Jon is an example

I think it's great to use family names, and I would go for it... but you might also want to consider using it as a middle name instead, because of the fact that the child may be ridiculed for having such a different name.

I would say go ahead and use the name. Have his nick name as Zek
Or
Zack or Zach
or use the end of the name..... Kiah

You can always use his middle name or use the name as a middle name

Use it as a middle name. I would not give a child a name that would cause him to be teased. Kids can be very cruel.

You could change it up a little to Zeke. It's still unique but not as unusual. And you can always make sure you tell him where it came from, and it will make sense.

Hezekiah might be best as a middle name.
