I'd guess that the Pirates will take a long look at Phil Garner. Although he was fired from the Astros this year, he played in Pittsburgh during his career and did manage the Astros to several playoff appearances and a World Series appearance. Tony Pena, another former Pirate who managed a suprising Royals team a few years ago and currently serves as a bench coach for the Yankees, could also be an option. I wouldn't hold my breath for someone like Girardi, who will be considered for premier jobs like the potential Yankees opening if Joe Torre gets fired. It will be hard to lure top-shelf candidates to Pittsburgh, with the promise of several more years of rebuilding ahead. I wouldn't be suprised if the Pirates also took a look at some candidates who don't have Major League managing experience, like the Washington Nationals did with Manny Acta or the Indians did a few years ago with Eric Wedge. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is reporting that Indians coach Joel Skinner could be a front runner for the job, which wouldn't be surprising given new GM Neal Huntington's ties with the Indians.

Jim Tracy deserved it based on his turnaround with the Rockies in leading them to the post season. If the Rockies won in spite of Jim Tracy then they probably would have played better for Clint Hurdle. They were 18-28 for Hurdle and 72 and 42 for Tracy. Project that for a whole year and they win 103 games. By the way he did win for the Dodgers in 2004. And based on your reasoning then Joe Torre should have never won a manager of the year award with the Yankees because he was worse than a so-so manager with the Braves, Cardinals, and Mets before going to the Bronx.

I'd put my money on Trent Jewett, currently manager of their AAA team in Indianapolis. They need someone who has experience and success working with young players and most of the candidates who've been working at the MLB level are too used to players who are already fully developed.
