Yes, but back then we dubbed them "Freedom fighters".

It's a little bit different, since the Taliban didn't really exist back then. The technology is different now. But I see your point. It is a country with a long history of repelling invaders. It is very difficult terrain to fight in. I am surprised anyone lives there.

We were supplying the Taliban. We were training them.
Now they use those weapons and training against us.
They stand with Osama.
The Russian military was never in a war like the one in Afghanistan. We have experience in guerilla warfare.
Apples and Oranges.
But good point!

The Soviets also used nasty little mines nick named toe poppers because they were small and quite often looked like children's toys. They were dropped frozen from high altitude so you couldn't even hear the planes flying over in the middle of the night.
The toe poppers thawed out over night and in the morning they could blow off a little hand or foot.
Those commies were mean as hell.

Its worse. At least the Soviets only had one front to contend with. We seem dead set on opening up a third.

I don't think that the Taliban was fully established in the eighties. The soviets were fighting the Mujaheddin at the time and they never got anywhere. We knocked the Taliban (old Mujaheddin) out of power. Granted we haven't wiped them out forever but you have to treat them like roaches, you have to keep going back to exterminate.

Yes I do. They were kicking *** for the longest time and were about to erradicate them until the US started supplying the Mujahadin with stinger missiles. The stingers changed everything and negated the USSR's ability to dominate and destroy with air power.
