I'm writing an article where I have to quote a lot , but I'm using the word "said" too much. What are some other good words I could use in place of said????

What you could do is tell me how it was said

"What do you mean?" she inquired, she postulated, she probed, she fairly spit out, she mumbled, she groused, she gasped.

stated, explained, answered, agreed, told, asked, quoted. Some of these can only be used in some situations e.g. "what are you talking about?" he asked.
