I have to agree with chads opening sentence; quality and inexpesnsivel in this case especially; does not compute.

It would be helpful to know WHAT materials you already have; and the type of Dock you might prefer. Obviously a floating dock is one type.

Piling driven into the water and floor of the body of water is another method.

HOW; is similar to decking; and every case should include treated lumber.

Unfortunately, "inexpensive" and "good quality" don't typically go together. If it's a DIY project (and thus labor is free), then you can only cut costs by using poorer grade lumber, using less lumber, or using cheaper materials (nails, screws, etc.). All of which will reduce the quality of your project.

If you cannot afford a quality dock, then wait until you can before you build one. Do it right the FIRST time. Building a cheap dock then having to replace it will cost you more than one good dock.

Go to the DIY website and look up floating docks. Also check with the Corp Of Engineers in your area for permitting.
