Are the ants making a large nest under the tree or are they walking up and down the trunk?

If the nest is extensive enough it could possibly destabilise a young tree and cause it to fall over. You can destroy the nest using an ant killer bait.

If they are walking up and down the trunk then they have an aphid 'farm' on the tree - aphids secrete honeydew, which ants love.
Check out the tree for aphid and kill them by squashing or wash them off with a soapy water solution.

The ants cannot kill your coconut tree. They are looking for food, which could be nectar from the flowers of the palm, or more likely the honeydew (sugar excretions) from a scale insect, or possibly mealybugs. If you control the scales, the ants will go away to look for food elsewhere.
