My mom is outright refusing to let me attend a UC school so she recommended that I attend SDSU instead (a state college). However, the school I originally had my heart set on, UCLA has one of the top nursing programs in the country and that's what I want to major in. So, I was wondering if it was possible for me to attend SDSU for two years (just enough to do my prerequisites). Is that okay? Or is it not recommended?

Community colleges have a much higher transfer rates to UCs than CSUs (depending on the campus, the transfer rate from community colleges is usually twice as much as other 4-year institutions). The reason is because the UCs discourage transfers from other 4-year institutions (you are already getting a college education, make way for other people). While it's not impossible to transfer from CSUs to UCs, if your ultimate goal is to graduate from a UC school, attending a community college is the easiest route (you get better transfer support and resources from your community college).

Going to a CSU system university then to UC is usually not permitted. Not only do the credits rarely transfer (see www.assist.org to verify), but also UC system sees you as a university student already, so you probably will not get accepted. The best way to transfer to UCLA is go to to community college. But i really do not recommend that. Since you want to go to UCLA nursing school, then it's better to go to UCLA for your whole four years or go to Community College, transfer, then go to Nursing School. Note, it is easier to got from CC to UC, rather than CSU to UC

Tell your mother that I said she is an idiot. Put it more nicely, though.

The UC schools are all among the best universities in the country. None of the CSU schools is very good -- and SDSU is one of the worst.

Tell her that when you graduate from a UC school, you will make twice as much as you would if you go to SDSU
