Because Harvard in an Ivy League school that carries tradition, honor, and respect. People pay the money because when they go out in the world, if they say "I went to Harvard," that carries a lot more weight than if they say, "I went to Smith Community College."

The students CHOOSE to go to these colleges, so if they are getting ripped off, it is their own choice. But they will probably be making so much money in their careers afterward that it doesn't matter how much they pay for college.

It is the quality of the education one receives, and also the marketability in the future that draw people to one school or another. This is really only a factor for those who can choose because the cost of their education is no object. Those who are not as fortunate must do the best they can with what options they have. Depending on where one receives their diploma from makes a difference on a resume. An A+ student may not be given the same consideration as one from Harvard. An A+ student from city college may not ever get preference over a C student from Harvard. It's an image and you're buying the name. Why is it that Tommy Hilfiger clothing is more coveted than those from JC Penney? The LABEL is what makes the difference.

Do you really need to go to Harvard just to study math? It doesn't make sense to me. When one attends any Ivy League schools, you pay the prestigious school (the name, the insignia, the recognition,uh!) and the subjects are just tertiary.
C' on,Chinese schools have better offer to give and you can count on them. Believe me,its not only common knowledge, its universal, too!
