Find a good chinchilla breeder. Just search 'Pennsylvania Chinchilla Breeders' or whatever state you're from. You might even be able to find babies at a chinchilla rescue shelter. Pet shops usually have baby chinchillas, too, but you have to check for signs of illnesses because a lot of those animals usually aren't the healthiest.

You should try to get one from a breeder close to you. I've got a list of breeders here that you can reference. There are certainly more chinchilla breeders out there than I've identified, but hopefully you live in one of these areas:

Some pet shops carry them. You will most often find that you will only be able to purchase a male. Most of the breeding farms keep the females because they a so small litters, are pregnant twice as long as a dog, and therefore do not breed that often. They do make very good pets but not for young children as they do have specific care requirements. Make sure you are aware of these requirements when you make your purchase. It is very important. I good book would be helpful, also.
