According to M$, a Windows Vista capable PC includes at least:
CPU: at least 800MHz
RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.
If you wish to install Windows Vista Premium your PC must be capable of handling the Windows Aero user experience, which involves an enhanced Windows theme that features the use of a lot of transparency, ergo, a much better graphics card and lots of RAM. Some specific premium editions of Windows Vista also feature the ability to watch and record live TV, and may require additional hardware.
Therefore, again according to M$, a Windows Vista Premium Ready PC includes at least:
CPU: 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64)
RAM: 1 GB
Video card: Support for DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum), Pixel Shader 2.0 and 32 bits per pixel.
HDD: 40 GB with 15 GB free space.
DVD-ROM Drive
Audio output capability and Internet access capability.
Your system has :
CPU: Intel Pentium M 1.5 GHz
RAM: Up to 2 GB
Video card: Built-in Intel Extreme Graphics 2 which specifies a maximum shared RAM of 96 MB, (probably) SM 2.0 and 32 bpp.
HDD: 80 GB
I'm pretty sure that you could run Vista, although any built-in graphics is an awful performance killer, and Vista is graphics intensive. In other words, I wouldn't bet on the experience being that smooth. It does appear, though, that your laptop could also 'handle' Vista Premium, although this is really pushing it. I'd stick with XP, and, if you're drooling over Halo 2, try getting an X-Box and Halo 3 instead.

Like some of the others suggested run the Vista upgrade advisor and see what you have. Make sure there are Vista drivers for your printer and any other external devices you may have. Make sure to upgrade to 2GBs of ram and you get a premium version because the home basic doesn't have Aero which is really nice. Tweaked right Vista runs great. Yeah, like some say Vista is a memory hog and people too cheap to put in more ram to run Vista the way it should be run can stick with their XP and play old DX9 video games. XP is yesterday's news.

Hello Spykes,
Here is basic Vista requirements:
Windows Vista System Requirements
Windows Vista requires a bit more hardware horsepower than the previous versions
of Windows. The more hardware capability you have, the better Vista will
run. The absolute minimum hardware requirements are as follows:
n 512 MB of RAM (although 1 GB is more like it)
n An 800 megahertz (MHz) 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
n A 20 GB or larger hard disk with at least 15 GB free space available
Here is a list of VISTA CAPABLE per HP:

Even with all that said, I have seen units that do not meet minimum reqs and yet run vista, so if they are close, try install, the worst to happen will be either vista will not allow install to proceed, or you will see much lang in it occurring and just abort it.

i does not. Vista is being replaced quickly by way of living house windows 7 reason there are too many problems with Vista. as long because of the fact the laptop is working stable---i might depart it. in case you desire a preview of the hassles of Vista, improve your IE 6 to 7. in case you like it...then improve to Vista. If that's a discomfort interior the butt and you do no longer like it----persist with XP. I actual have a clean comp that got here with Vista and that i used "killdisk" and am working XP. Wait somewhat formerly you bounce on the sinking Vista deliver.

Go to the HP website. There should be a place on the site to be able to scan your computer to see if it's Windows Vista upgradeable.
If you cannot find a place to do the scan, go to Customer Support to get help with finding the scan.

I recommend not upgrading to Vista.
1) HP does not have Vista drivers for this notebook. Without the Vista drivers, expect very poor performance.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=435618&lang=en
2) Their is limited support for the graphics processor 855GM. It will not support the Vista Aero interface.
Per Intel.
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-023606.htm
However, Windows Vista is supported on the Intel® 865G, 915G Express desktop chipsets and 852/855GM mobile chipsets running XPDM (XP Display Driver Model) driver included on the Windows Vista install media. Windows Vista will install on these platforms, but advanced features such as Windows Aero will not be enabled as XPDM drivers do not support Windows AERO.
3) Intel Pentium M 1.5 GHz is slow for Vista. Expect considerable lag on applications when using Vista.
4) You will need to upgrade to 2 GB DDR266 ($80) and buy Vista ($150+).
5) Microsoft will have mainstream support for XP until 14/04/2009 and extended support until 08/04/2014 per

Wait another 6 months on the Vista. let Microsoft work out all the problems first. then check with the minimum requirements on the Vista package and check your system.

I've heard that a lot of people find Vista to not be very user friendly and on top of that it is a TCPA based OS which means it wont run free or open source software.
Most people prefer XP and some who are more concerned about privacy choose Linux.

I had a brand new Sony Vaio with a 2.2GHz processor and 2GB of ram. I sent it back because Windows Vista ran slow. I highly recommend that you stay with Windows XP for at least another year of two.
