With the fans coming on and the car over heating so fast, it sounds like one of four problems.

A- No coolant? Is there a leak? Did you check the fluid level?

B- Thermostat is stuck causing the coolant not to circulate and boil inside the engine block and not making it to the radiator. When the fans are on, does it blow hot air or cold air? Cold air means the coolant is not circulating.

C- Head gasket is leaking exhaust into the coolant and heating it up very quickly and causing to much pressure on the system.

D- Water pump impeller came apart or lost the belt for the water pump causing lack of circulation of coolant.
My guess is the thermostat!

It could be several things. It could just be low on coolant. Have you checked the radiator or overflow tank? Do this only when it's cool, though, or you may get a painful burn. If you add coolant, be sure it's the right kind for your car, and it contains the right mixture of water and antifreeze. If you're in a cold weather environment, you'll need that protection soon.

It could be that the water pump has failed, or there's air in the system that keeps coolant from circulating. Have a mechanic check for these.

It's none of the above. Don't waste time and money guessing. Go to a RADIATOR SHOP, not an auto repair, and get the radiator cleaned. Look in your phone book if you don't know where one is.

it might be the thermostat or the radiator cap
i suggest you preasure test the system to check for leaks
check the overflow tank for cracks

Change the engine coolant thermostat inside the bell housing where the top big fat black radiator hose connects to the engine.

Does it overheat while driving (especially at high speeds)? If it does, replace the thermostat. Easy, cheap task. $10 for the thermostat.
