I am a 14 year old girl and I am very interested in theatre. So far, I have done 12 community theatre shows and one at a college that my friends got me into. I really want to get big roles. My only principle role was Maggie in A Chorus Line at Long Lake Camp (best camp EVER). Any ideas on how to get leads? It's hard for me because of my age...and height (I'm short-ish, 5'1"). Maybe I can't get some leads because I'm asian?

Just keep working on building a good resume with smaller parts and student theatre for now. As far as professional theatre, there's the issue of needing an agent to even get an audition for a lot of it. And then, because of your age, there are a LOT of restictions with child labor laws. In community theatre, you're working with older and (sometimes) more experienced actors. Most of the lead characters I can think of are older charcters- someone that (outside of student theatre where the whole cast is in their teens-twenties) would be cast with an older actor. You'll probably have better luck with landing lead rolls in your school's drama club productions. If your school doesn't have a drama club, talk to a favorite teacher about the possibility of starting one! As for the height...you're only 14. You still may grow a bit. And you can always wear heels!

At 14 you have an impressive resume. Naturally you want bigger roles and they will come to you as you mature. Writers do not create big roles for youngsters very often. As far as your being Asian is concerned, if you cop out on that excuse you have no business being an actor. If you don't succeed it is because you are not good enough, not that you are Asian. Theatre and film are the most racially blind industries in the world. Just keep at it. When you are just a bit older and have taken a couple of profesional classes you will be ready to try to get an agent. If you want help with all this, read my profile and write to me at my aol address.

Don't say you can't get leads because of your nationality. I am Native American and I've gotten leads in the past. Once you get that out of your head you will have taken the first step in the right direction. All I can say to you is to keep trying. Get training whenever you can. If there is an audition coming up, read the script as soon as you can so you have an idea of the story, characters and what you might want to play. You're still very young so you have lots of time to develop your talents. Just keep working at it and be patient. Rome wasn't burned in a night. Good luck. I wish you the best.
