I agree. If we didn't buy the crap they put out they would have no reason to chase and harass our "Stars". The problem is, is that some of that publicity is needed to get us interested in those same "Stars" up and coming projucts. It all comes down to money once again," the root of all evil".

This is a pretty topical question in light of the Princess Diana Inquest going on at the moment. Would the car of crashed if the 'Paps' hadn't been chasing it? Peoples desire these days for pictures and gossip of the celebs is what keeps the Paps in a job and there are more and more of these types of magazines on the market plus the Daily Newspapers which 'buy' these pictures. I have to confess though, I do buy Heat Magazine for the 2 reasons I listed above.

I don't think verbally-bashing people who read celebrity magazines is really the way to going about answering this question. sure, common sense says that if you stop paying attention to the celebrities buy stopping buying the magazines they frequent interest in them will go away. however, I do not believe it to be the case that people, not even the ones writing here, want this to happen. I don't believe that you pay absolutely no attention to it because celebrity has become such an integral part of popular culture. the terms used in the question itself, 'public figures' and 'celebrity' justify a public interest, note the use of 'celebrity', not 'star', connoting someone of special talent, or any term pronouncing the reasons for why these people are famous. 'celebrity' has become a publicly constructed profession, one which is separate from 'actor' or 'musician'. the difference between lindsay lohan and cate blanchett? the insufferable need for attention on the part of lohan. and so we ask, if we the public stop reading these magazines, will it be only the magazine industry which suffers or the celebrity population as well? If celebrities didn't go out of their way to pronounce to the world their every-day goings on through the pages of 'Ok' for huge sums of money, maybe I would be a bit more sympathetic. and I am to those who do not constantly throw themselves in to the public eye, accept millions of pounds worth of freebies from the most prestigious companies on the planet for free publicity for their target demographic, reject an invitation or two when they have absolutely no reason to be there and instead let their work do the taking. you cannot take money from promoting yourself and then complain when you are hounded. sure, we're partly to blame for the rise of the celebrity but with the influx of reality tv shows over the last decade, even celebrity reality tv shows, it surely shows that people are craving for fame, no matter what they must do to get it or the effect in the long run. people are very quick to blame the press, even take a snipe at the public, but celebrities are far from innocent victims.

Gee, you think?

These people do this because they can sell the pictures for big money. The magazines buy them for big money because they can sell more magazines with these pictures to the starry-eyed fans who think that if they only dress like Madonna or Diana or Britney, they'll date Matt or George or whoever is popular for this 15 minutes. These people need a life.
