The OFFICIAL answer from Hanna-Barbera was Barney worked for Pebble Rock and Travel Company. His boss was Mr. Pebble.
Barney's office and boss can both be seen in episode 7 of season 1 called "The Babysitters".
Did anyone who answered that Barney worked in the quarry with Fred ever notice that they would carpool together but never went to the same job? Did anyone notice that we never actually saw Barney working at the quarry?

There was one episode where Barney worked at the quarry and becomes vice-president called 'Fred's New Boss' (season 2). But he didn't stay there past the episode.

Although, Fred and Barney DID work at the quarry together during The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show and The Flintstones Comedy Hour...but not during the original run of The Flintstones (other than the episode mentioned above). Don't believe "The Straight Dope" answer...sounds more like The Dope giving it to you straight.

I think he used to work at the same place Fred worked but had a work related injury and got a huge settlement and draws disability. He didn't work. He was lazy.
