I have a hyphenated last name. If someone writes me a check do they have to put the hyphenated name or can they just put my married last name? Assuming they didn't know it was hyphenated. Would the bank still cash it?

Yes they will cash it for you. especially if they know you
Even though I mostly use my married name, my name is still hyhenated with my birth name and married name together.
I leave it that way for my writing, as to ensure there isnt another person out there with that same name combination. As both of my names help create who I am now.
And if I use just one or the other, then I have other people with that same name, but sometimes a different middle intial.

As you never being who you are even when you become something else.

It doesn't matter, as long as the person cashing the check has the account they are cashing the check against. Your name has very little to do with your bank accounts, it is the NUMBER that counts. As long as you have the correct account number the check could be made out to Kermit The Frog and it would still be cashed/deposited into the account with that NUMBER.

The answer is yes they will cash it, but technically they should not. Banks are not as concerned about your security as they once were.

You can use either. I have my own credit card with "maiden" and the joint stuff has his last name.
