A speakeasy was a place in the 1920s during the prohibition of liquor that people could go and drink bootleg (illegal) spirits and beer. They were often called speakeasies because one needed a password and/or needed to know someone who ran it to get in. Some (though not all) were run by the mobsters of the era.

Often, there would be jazz, dancing and socialising in speakeasies, which were often held in basements or lounges and moved cnsistently so that they couldn't be tracked down.

The speakeasy came about during prohibition. They were basically illegal bars. In order to get in, you had to know the code word(s), and you had to be quiet-hence the term "speakeasy". As a rule, they don't exist, since alcohol is legal in most places. Maybe in some dry counties there are a few-hard to say.

They were places during American prohibition in the 1920's that people could get alcohol and party, although it was illegal to have alcohol. Usually they would have live music, too.
