They are trying to ,but the republicans that are still left in congress are making it difficult. Remember that in the U.S. Senate there is something called the filibuster and the democrat so not have the votes to break it, If the Anti-War movement is really strong , why did Lieberman still win after giving up his democratic status.
Even though they are the majority ,they still lack the votes to over ride a Bush veto.

The left (democrats, that is) will not defund the war because they want Bush blamed for the defeat, not themselves. They have worked for years to turn the American public against the war. Along with their media shills, the left has claimed that it is a hopeless cause, that it is a civil war, that it is already lost, that the Iraqi people are not doing their part, that it is taking money away from social programs and that it has caused the rest of the world to hate us.
They tried to convince the American people that Bush lied in order to get us involved. He lied about WMD, he lied about the "real reasons" for the war, they say, wanting us to believe that the president actually went to war "for oil".
They then began attacking members of the military, calling American soldiers murderers, accusing them of rape, torture and every other evil that entered their minds. All of this was done in the hope of making voters demand that we give up and come home.
But unlike conditions during Vietnam, today the American people have access to the truth. From talk radio to the internet, facts are available to anyone interested enough to look for them. The media monopoly which helped the left betray this nation and which led to the murder of 2 million Cambodians and Vietnamese after US forces pulled out in 1974, no longer exists. Of course this is an inconvenience the left will work to correct if Hillary should actually be elected. Truth in the hands of the public is far too dangerous to the well-being of the democrat party and the rest of the left.
The left has tried all of this to turn the American people into a bunch of 60s protestors, but none of it has worked. That puts responsibility squarely on congressional democrats and that is the one place they do NOT want it.

I think that then the soldiers over there would be stranded or feel abandoned and the Dems don't want to take that blame when they want to look like they are the ones working to get them back home. But if they defunded the war, then the Dems could then provide a budget to bring them home and the Republicans would be in a position of saying out loud clearly that they want to leave them in harms way. So yeah, its time to start having demonstrations in DC or something like had to be done for Viet Nam....but this time, the public will accept the vets coming home and realize they deserve care and support for all the **** they have been put through in an effort to serve a bunch of politicians who are using them.

Because bringing the troops home is not what they want.
In a recent poll, 20% of Democratic Politicians admitted they wanted America to LOSE THE WAR.
Look, and please, save the moronic calls for Vietnam-like protests because that is just insultingly naive... here's the agenda and it's very obvious.
Democrats want this war to be a loss. Then they can blame Bush like they blame him for everything else. They can use that to gain political traction and try to regain power. It's not about getting the troops out of harm's way and it never was.
It's about seizing power.
Think about what happened when Petraeus came back with reports of progress! That didn't sit well with them. Doesn't fit into their scheme of things, so they smeared him. Smear tactics are their weapon of choice and you'll see more and more of it as times go by. Rush Limbaugh just got smeared. President Bush can't go a day without being smeared. What I find hilarious is all the stupid (and I do mean stupid because they aren't just ignorant... they don't WANT to know) liberals going around saying the troops should be brought home and they aren't doing any good over there.
ASK THE TROOPS!
You're not over there, people. You're not QUALIFIED to make a statement about what is happening over there. You have only what the media tells you to go by and they have an agenda themselves.
ASK THE TROOPS.
The Democrats already tried to defund the war. The other problem they face is the American people don't WANT to lose the war like they do. They want them to SUPPORT our troops. Too bad they've put politics ahead of patriotism.

Clearly you have never spent any time in the military. Sure, Congress can "defund" the war but that doesn't mean the war is over. That just means that the military will look to other areas to pull money from. They will cancel improvements plans, schools systems, civil work force, etc....Yes, Congress can and has threaten to "defund" the war but there is an old say "A soldier is only has good as his family is." A soldier has enough on his plate trying to stay alive, he doesn't need to worry about the wellfare of his family as well. Establish a time line, mandate government changes (in Iraq), allow the soldiers to do their job and, above all, do not take away the livelyhood (they are barely paid enough as it is).

I agree and I'm a Democrat
They don't have the votes to over turn a Bush Veto and they are scared if they defund they will be labeled the party that is anti military.
Harry Reid is the worst I have ever seen, how does he walk with no backbone and Pelosi is not much better.
We need Biden to be Senate Majority Leader he holds no punches.

Of course, you are right. Technically the Democrats have the power to defund the war. However, the President could refuse to bring the troops home and the Democrats would be forced to provide basic funding or they would be considered leaving our troops standing. The power of Commander in Chief is very strong.

I am totally dismayed by the number of people who do not know how our government works! From the Constitution of the United States: Every bill which shall have passed the house of representatives(congress) & the senate; shall, before it becomes a law, be presented to the President, if he approves it he shall sign it, but if not shall return it, with his objections to that house in which it shall have orginated, who shall enter the objections at large on their journal, & proceede to reconsider it. If after such reconsideration two thirds of that house shall agree to pass the bill, it shall be sent, together with the objections, to the other house(senate), by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that house, it shall become law. The President has 10 days to return the bill(Sundays excepted)after it has been presented to him, it shall become law as if he had signed it. So you see, they cannot just "defund" it Yes, they do have a majority in the Congress; but it is only a slight majority, perhaps only 1 or 2 votes. They need the Republicans to vote with them in order to get any bill passed. To anyone who read my un-edited post, I apologize for having been wrong in my posting. I had doubts, so looked it up! These are the facts folks!

They are afraid to. The first time a serviceman or woman gets even the most minor scratch because of of equipment shortage due to lack of funding, whoever voted for "de funding" will be heading to the nearest bomb shelter as they are reminded that military people and their families also vote.
