I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, and have read each of the 7 books at 3-4 times each.
Actually, the "fake" version that was floating around is actually a fanfic by a writer called Melinda Leo. It was never written as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" but as "Harry Potter and the Seventh Horcrux". This was actually an ongoing fanfic which Melinda Leo was writing and it was finished well before JK Rowling even announced the title of the seventh book.

A couple of months before HPDH was supposed to hit the markets, some people started circulating the Seventh Horcrux as Deathly Hallows.
I have read the Seventh Horcrux completely - I read it much before Deathly Hallows was out. It is one of the best fanfics out there.
Melinda Leo has done a great job - this book is totally canon, and follows through all the hints dropped by J K Rowling in books 1-6. She has plotted it beautifully, and while she may not be J K Rowling herself, she has done a great job. In a few aspects, she has done better than Rowling (e.g. I was disappointed by how easy JKR made the finding and destruction of the diadem - Melinda did the same a lot more smartly)
The major differences are:
- Ginny has a much bigger role; they are actually on the run as a foursome. Harry's resolve to break the relationship with Ginny lasts only until Bill-Fleur's wedding
- Voldemort doesn't take over the ministry - Umbridge suceeds Scrimgeour as Minister of Magic, and allies with Voldemort's people to keep the peace
- Snape is evil
However some of the similarities are simply amazing - it was almost like Melinda could see through JKR's careful plotting and use it.
- Harry is a Horcrux
- The diadem/tiara as horcrux
- Lupin and Tonks die; in fact their death is dealt with much better
- Harry's short journey to afer-life, in Melinda's version it is when he kills Voldemort. Harry visits a place in his headl the Gryffindor Common Room instead of King's Cross, but meets Dumbledore there who explains everything. Later he's joined by other dead people such as Sirius, Lupin, his parents (similar to when he used the resurrection stone)
If you have time some time, do give it a shot. Try not to compare it with the Deathly Hallows because that will disappoint you, but read it in itself.

I am guessing that it is not while I am not a published writer , however I have worked at Waldenbooks and other bookstores and let me tell you that the publishing company that publishes JKRowling and her Harry Potter series is VERY strict about retailers not breaking street dates on the HPotter books. Street Dates are the dates that are listed for the retailers to start selling the books , Scholastic has threatened companies with severe fines and the loss of saleing any of their books, You might have gotten hold of a ARC or advanced readers copy but those things are rare and again Scholastic has those guarded as well.

I've only read the real version part of the plot does deal with Harry's cloak, a wand and a stone. but the stone doesn't come in to play until neer the end the same could be said about the wand. in the book there was mentioned that one of the three had gotten a wizards version of a fairy tale book and that's how they learn about the hallows in witch harry had one from book one.

i think you've read a fan fiction version of the supposed "leak"...
but i do know that there are downloadable e-books from U-Torrent which are encoded versions of DH... aside from a few typographical errors, they are pretty accurate.

Sorry I didn't read the fake one but let me tell you that once the title of the book came out it was followed by a lot of speculation and fanfiction. Are you sure you didn't read fanfiction because there was this girl that wrote a very good strory and someone read it and decided it was the real one so you better check that source.

Read the real version, not the fake and loved it. Why worry about a cheap imposter?
