I feel like I'm missing out on some antiquated secret society of buried poets not having ever had the opportunity. Although I've heard Marilyn Manson will be marketing his own version that might be available in the US. Anyone ever partaken of the green stuff? Is it anything special?

Just a couple of things I found on wikipedia that I thought were relative:

"The deleterious effects of absinthe as well as its hallucinogenic properties are a persistent myth often repeated without support in modern books and scientific journals."

&

"In 2007 the first legally available absinthe has been approved for sale in the US. These brands must pass TTB testing, which is an older standard and would appear to have a margin of error of around 10 mg/l thujone . Thus brands that are under the limit 'officially' don't contain thujone even if in actualality they do. Two brands currently available are Lucid and Kübler, with more to come."

Looks like I'll get a chance to try it.

As a matter of fact, yes! And I loved it. Back when I use to drink myself into a stooper before getting up and going to college and then working 12 hour days (and still managed a 3.8 gpa and a very lean figure...hehe), I had friends who made the stuff themselves...was probably illegal, but they did. We would light sugar on fire and dump it in before drinking. I remember that the feeling was so much different than that of any other booze. It was great. Probably my favorite drink at the time.

Still don't know what was in it...but it's probably better I don't know. :)

Side note: I thought opium was involved...am I wrong? Anyone know?

It tastes not too bad and apparently is poisonous in large quantities.
I was told by a barman that it isn't legal to serve more than 2 shots to the same person - in the UK, that is! Then he promptly served me 3 in short succession!

Also, apparently, it caused Vincent van Gogh to cut one of his ears off!

Postscript: The ketone Thujon was originally blamed for being responsible for Absinthe's hallucinogenic qualities, but that has been discounted now, as there doesn't appear to be enough in the green fluid to affect the drinker.

Yes!

My friends and I had Fairy Bombs last night. They're cocktails made with absynthe.

If you drink it by itself, it tastes like anise. (I like it.)

It's legal here where I live. (Japan)

Peace.

Edit: To RaddicalGrl25,

There's no opium in it, but there is Wormwood. Wormwood is an opiate in that it causes you to hallucinte if you consume enough of it.
