Coming together as a nation. American citizens need to work together as a whole and not against each other. (Rome fell from within) .
Others:
Educaton
Lower taxes
Lowering medical cost (not universal health care)
Enforcing laws
Stop people who abuse the welfare programs who are able to work.
Get the people out of office who do not represent the people and elect new ones that will do better jobs.
American citizens need to be more envolved with their politics and more educated as to what goes on.

Economic reform.

The easiest thing to fix would be elimination of farm subsidies. They are sold to US voters as helping poor farmers, but in reality it is a form of corporate welfare that costs us hundreds of billions of dollars every single year. This hurts us in other ways as well. If you have been reading about free trade talks breaking down in the last few years or so, it is the result of these subsidies. We want poor countries around the world to open their markets up to American products (which is good for us) but then we refuse to stop subsidizing our farmers and do not allow them to sell their only imports (produce and sugar) here in the US. It has gotten so bad here that a recent academic study on the sugar subsidies revealed that every single person who is employed in the United States to produce sugar costs the rest of the country $1 million. That means if we took every single person in the entire sugar industry and told them we would pay their salary as it is now for the rest of their lives if they promised not to make sugar anymore and we opened up the market to international trade, it would be a huge net gain.

There are many other issues, but that's fine for now.

There is no war. We're occupying two countries, but the wars were won years ago. How can we ever understand what is happening if we can't even call a spade a spade?

Fix our economy. Stop allowing American companies to export jobs. It's only hurting the middle class. I have read that once a civilization's middle class dwindles then that is a clear sign of bad things to come.
