A small block is better for fuel economy. A big block is for sheer power.

The displacement is greater on a big block and normally you have a longer stroke. This allows for higher horsepower and torque from modifications. You can squeeze plenty out of a small block, I have a 302 (small block) that puts out 320 hp. The big blocks are heavier but better for torque output. As a general rule if you can get 1 horsepower per cubic inch you are doing good.
