anything labelled 'woodland' is great. Lily of the valley are nice and smell great, hellebores bloom in January, astibles come in a variety of colours, heucheras are great for all the great leave variations-'Lime Ricky' 'Obsidian' 'Aber Waves'
'Mint Mocha' 'Green Spice' (all Heuchera's)
any fern or hosta- some unique ferns are , hart's tongue fern, royal fern, and maidenhair is outstanding

I don't know what zone you are in, but here are some great ideas for you! (I gave suggestions for plants that require part shade to shade...)

PERENNIALS: Hosta, Astilbe, Heuchera, Ferns, Oxalis, Campanula, Viola, Geranium, Helleborus, Acanthus, Bergenia, Brunnera, Cimicifuga, Dicentra, Corydalis, Epimedium, Lamium, Lamiastrum, Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea', Omphalodes, Primula, Pulmonaria, Stylophorum, Thalictrum, Tricyrtis, Vinca minor

SHRUBS: Coprosma, Buxus, Deutzia, Fuchsia, Hydrangea, Lonicera pileata, Lonicera nitida

ORNAMENTAL GRASSES: Carex morrowii, Carex tumulicola, Festuca californica, Hakonechloa, Milium, Ophiopogon, Phormium (mainly the variegated ones)

Hostas, impatiens, begonias, ferns, ivy, oxalis (lovely ground cover, particularly oxalis oregana)
