The main reason for deforestation in poor countries is for one purpose and that is to satisfy the demands of the western world. Often the government, like in the case of Brazil, will build and even pave a road leading into the rainforest. This leads to many people having ready access to the land and its gifts. Unfortunatly, poor people are often the ones that move into newly cut rainforest, they grow crops for maybe two to three years and then abandon the land because of erosion and nutrient deprivision. In a single sentence, the rainforest is dissappearing because of the need to satisfy the lives on the ruling nations.

Here's the answers for that.
1.People's needs - people are multiplying in millions every year, and the space to accomodate every person is getting less and less, so land developers use this reason to clearcut the forest for land area, but sadly, not all can afford the price tag for each developed property for housing.

2. People's wants - let's face it people are selfish at times, they want more instead of what is only sufficient, people who can afford would like to have a bigger land or property for themselves for their enjoyment, besides they have the money to do so.

3. People's greed - some people will clear cut a forest to earn more money not only for urban development but also for the profit they can get from what is taken from the forest

P.S. you may have other ideas for your research paper, so you may start with these if you can't think of any.

Only uneducated people do stupid things like ruin the planet. Education and knowledge is a powerful thing. I suggest you write about how we can teach these developers how we need the rain forest to survive. and how is we destroy anymore of the earth for urban development there will be no urbanites to live there.

If you live in a rain forest and your population is growing. where would you build. It no more unconscionable than destroying farmland in the US to build homes.
