at some point down the road i would like to upgrade to a 8800 or 2900hd?

It is a pretty decent machine that could play many games up to medium settings. Upgrading to high end DX10 later would be a good move. Better make your move when DX10.1 is in place. Just make sure you also upgrade your power supply to match the appetite of the monster cards. You may also have to overclock your processor to 2.5ghz or better level so as not to bottleneck the fast high-end cards.

Nice for XP. No, not equivalent to a 4.2 P4. CPUs are rated at what they will run single threads at and a 2.4 P4 will run single threads faster than your 2.1 dual which only uses one core to run single threads. If you wanna run Vista you'd need an 8000 series Nvidia or 2000 series ATI video card to run DX10.

This is good but it does not necessary equal to 4.2ghz.
Core duo does not add by 2, it just means parallel tasking.
AMD CPU Athlon is 64bit already. I have been using AMD since K6-2 series. Go buy it.

That's a perfectly good mid-range PC these days. Good RAM, ok processor, decent graphics.
