You can use a computer and software to view waveforms produced by musical instruments. An electronic instrument called an Oscilloscope is used to view wave forms (the changes in amplitude over time) There is software for the PC which displays sound as a wave form, these are listed as "Tuners" like G-Tune or Sound card Oscilloscopes.

You can use freeware, trial ware or purchase an inexpensive license for software which will let you view what a sound looks like. Other software like Audacity lets you edit sound and view a wave forms of a recorded sound

Dataq, com offers a free data aquisition kit for students. this will allow you to capture low voltage electical signals like those from a speaker or audio amplifier onto your PC. See links for application and details

Some Ideas and questions you can research:

What type of wave forms are there? What do they look like? What is: Frequency, Amplitude, Harmonic,Resonance.

How is sound transmitted, what effects sound (material it travels through(solids , liquid, gas) , effects of temperature and humidity on sound transmission, effect of these on different instruments.

What makes a C note sound different when played on different instrument.

What does a single note played on a piano look like compared to a major or minor chord. What do multiple notes C,D,E (not a chord) look like and why do they sound like they do.

Compare how a synthizer or organ simulates the sound of a musical instrument compared to the real thing. Can you duplicate a sound by mixing different wave forms.

Using the principle of a string instrument could you fabricate a device that could measure a physical property by using sound. Think of the expansion and contraction of a guitar string vs temperature. Could you experiment with differnent strings and use software to measure changes. How about making a scale where a person standing on a pad causes the guitar string to be tensioned. Pluck the string and using a guitar pickup have the computer measure the frequency and determine the weight of the person by the value of frequency produced.

Think about the weight experiment and research what a vibrating wire piezometer is and how it works. see link
