Hi,
Up until 1790, New York City was the capital of the United States. Additionally, it was also New York's state capital until 1797 when Albany took over.
So, why Albany? Part of the appeal was the city's access to shipping routes, but the bigger reason may have been a desire to keep government separate from the big money of Wall Street.
That's my theory, though I couldn't find any authoritative sources to back it up. Anyone else have more luck?

Because, long before New York City grew up, Col. Albany was a very important political person, and through his dealings with the likes of Benjamin Franklin, helped form the U S of A.

NYC was the original Capital of the US before DC, so some other city had to suck it up in NY. I guess Albany lost the coin toss, and has been a jacked up, liberal, sorry place ever since!
