As others have said for you budget, secondhand is the best option and you can get some good laptops in your price range. The place to start is to get a copy of Micromart which costs £1.99 every Thursday (since you've asked in £'s you must be in the UK), most newsagents only get it to order but larger supermarkets often stock it and W H Smith's do as well.
A quick look through will show some good secondhand deals from companies that have advertised in Micromart for years. One of the companies I have bought from with no problem is
http://www.trcomputers.com/
they are selling an IBM R32 Thinkpad for £179 inc VAT, it has good specs, is ready to use out of the box and comes with a 90 day RTB warranty. I have an older T21 Thinkpad and it's a great machine and as a cool factor, NASA and the Russian Space Agency have been using Thinkpad's in Space for a lot of years. If you look through you will see more good deals but for the money I personally think the T32 is the best deal for your budget and a 10 year old daughter.
As a last thought, being that the machine is for a 10 yr old child, if she is going to go online with it I would suggest it is set up somewhere where you can keep a eye on her rather than in her bedroom. Also to keep the machine secure goto

where you will find software and security tips written in plain English.
Good luck

With such a tight budget I'd advise against it. ...
They are likely to be old, and laptops are not the most reliable machines - on the whole. A poorly maintained laptop will need to have the operating system re-built (increasingly difficult with windows licensing). If you buy badly the thing will drive you mad.
Older operating systems will be less likely to run new programs, and at 10 she will probably want new stuff on it.
Can you save up over the next couple of years to buy a newer machine - possibly a refurbished mac. The Apple operating system will be easier to use, and more crash resistant. At her age she would qualify for educational discount on a new mac.

Laptops are not ideal for 10 year olds. Get a second hand one if your positive to get one.
If its for school work, and you don't have a desktop at home, then invest in a good cheap one, maybe a dell desktop with free monitor otherwise get your kid to use it!

I can't remember if it's curry's, comet or pc world but, if you subscribe to orange broadband they will give you a laptop for nowt! that way you don't have to fork out all at once and just pay the monthly subscription.
