I don't spend a lot of time thinking about the oboe, but now that you brought it up....
I think it is a very interesting instrument. It is more nasal than the clarinet and therefore has never achieved the popularity. The oboe is a very useful instrument for implying certain moods or attitudes. For instance crankiness or comical self importance. No instrument could better serve the purpose of giving geese a musical voice. All in all I think the oboe has never met it's master who can bring it to the masses. Benny Goodman gave us the popular clarinet as lead. Boots Randolf gave us the saxaphone. Kenny G the flute. Who is known for the oboe? Do you play? Perhaps you are the oboe virtuoso the world is waiting for. The oboe is under recognized and under utilized. For God's sake someone get with it will ya? Thanks for bringing it up.

It's a pretty cool instrument. I'd say different from most instruments. It has a very distinct sound and not everyone does like it. I however have no problem with it, its a great instrument and that's that.

A beautiful instrument that is probably the hardest woodwind to play. I play tuba myself--it's easy.

Uurghh!
I can't stand it! It's the most obnoxious instrument known to man! It's just one long screech that sounds like a dying duck. Or cow.
