Gay joke? I don't think so....

A "pager" is a device that's about half the size of a small cell phone with a very small display. Before cell phones came so popular, we used to carry it around.

When someone wanted to talk to someone else and he couldn't be reached, we used to call a special phone number, and punch in a number that needed to be called. When it was done, a radio transmitter was activated at a "station" and it called out to this "pager" device we used to carry on our belts. It goes "puzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!" and the little display showed the number to call.... Then we go to a pay phone and return his call. It's all but dissapeared now.

It was a one way device. If someone didn't call back, we had no idea if he was ignoring me or didn't get the page at all.

No matter what it may have been, a pager is the common term for a type of mobile communication device. After all, a "*****" used to be a bundle of sticks, and don't even get me started on Snapper Lawn Mowers...
