I mean, if I say: "I'm a stay at home mom" why some people look at me funny or say: "Oh, you don't have an occupation".
I mean: "Wtf"?? Do they understand how many hours we deal with "housework" or "emotions" or...etc?????

Note to 'Green Eyes' - maybe if you had 2 or 3 kids to look after, you would have something else to say!

I recently became a SAHM (Stay at home mom) 4 months ago. My husband is an active duty Ssgt for the Marine Corps and we move roughly every 3 years. After our recent move, we decided together that it would be in our best interests to have me be a homemaker since he works long hours. I'm basically filling in as if I were a single parent. My husband is gone from 7am-12am every day with the exception of Sunday which is his only day off.

We don't get compensated monetarily for the services we provide, but I know this is the best for my kids. My daugther is a 12 year old with A.D.D. and auditory processing delay so she requires a lot of help with her schoolwork. My 2 year old son is a wild child and is active non-stop with the exception of his forced nap at 3pm each day. I forgot to mention we also have 4 dogs, all Siberian Huskies.

Since becoming a homemaker I approached my husband with the idea of continuing my education, so I had his G.I. bill transfered into my name and I'm currently attending online courses for my degree in Health Care Management. Since I can perform that job from home as well!

When people ask what I do, I proudly tell them I'm a stay at home mom. I only bring up being a full time college student later in the conversation since I consider a homemaker a tougher job!

Damn right that a homemaker or stay-at-home mom is a job. Grocery shopping, doing laundry, house cleaning, paying bills, watching the children, etc. etc. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

Can you imagine if homemakers were actually paid for all of the services they provided? They might make more money than doctors or lawyers -- either way they certainly deserve it.

THANK YOU for those of you that stay home and do the dirty work!

I'm telling ya!
OH! So getting 8 loads of laundry done in less than 12 hours isn't work?(Of course, this includes folding and putting away, and it's only 3 days a week)
Keeping the kitchen and bathroom clean
Changing diapers
Braiding hair
Giving baths
Feeding the animals
Playing "referee"
Going shopping
Managing a budget

Noooo
Doesn't sound like work, does it?
People can be so ignorant.
Yeah. We can do it on our own time, and we aren't payed nearly enough, but it IS an occupation.
(I'm with ya!!!)

You bet your Dog-gone Bootie it is!! You're a Doctor-Lawyer-Cheif-Referee-Accountants-Painters-Teachers-Lovers-Singers-Comforters-Bankers-and much, much, more all rolled up into one person. That's one big heck of a Job I'd say.You help to shape our future presidents and future lawyers and future nurses, and doctors. Without Moms the World would be Lost.I love my Mom for all the things she did for me and my Dad too. He got out and worked, but my Mother worked very hard in our home to keep our clothes looking nice and food on the table and helped us with our home-work.She was fortunate enough to be able to stay home but that sure didn't mean she had a freaking Free-ride for God's sake. She had her Hands Full! I Applaud You Darlin. God Bless you and Don't let anyone ever tell you that your JOb isn't Important!!They are Stupid if they think otherwise, they don't know what they are talking about!!!
Plus it's lousy pay and no 401K- hell if it ain't under-rated.
Dam* right you're a Goddess, yall need a Special Holiday just for Moms!!!

Yes it is a full time job. I too am a stay at home mom and contrary to popular belief I do not sit on my butt, watch t.v. all day and eat Bon Bons. Good for you!

P.S. I also respect women who work outside the house, but just because we don't also have an outside job doesn't mean anything. I do not get to interact with other adults, get taken advantage of, and don't get to send the kids off to daycare all day, so that I can come home to a clean house.

I think it is the hardest job in the world to be a stay at home mom. I don't have kids but I care for them in a day care and I am glad to get home. lol I like my job but kids are hard work and then have to do house work on top of that. wow

if you are a homemaker do people realize how many different jobs you have;maid, cook, accountant, decorator, taxi, gardener, maintence repair person, tutor, teacher, doctor, nurse, nanny, mother and wife I would not worry about what the other half thinks I would just be greatful that at this period of time you can be a homemaker because this is something that not everybody gets the chance to do.

Homemaker" seems to be regarded as a dark corner of the back shelf sort of job, not a combination of counselling service, taxi , bakery. laundry, nurse. schoolwork expert and all round good person.
Too much for small minds to take in I suppose.

I feel what you feel. This is the hardest "non"job I have ever had. I work all the time, have no paycheck of my own and I get to take children to the doctor. My oldest had an ingrown toenail that had to be cut out --- and guess who held him while the doctor worked? But, it is worth it....I know it and you know it and don't you just wish the rest of the world knew it as well. Take a deep breath and it will pass....trust me it always does....
Peace.
