Hi,

Cup A 4 ounces coffee
Cup B 4 ounces cream

Pour ½ the coffee or 2 ounces into cup B

Cup A 2 ounces coffee
Cup B 4 ounces cream + 2 ounces coffee, so 2/3 of this is cream.

Pour ½ the 6 ounces total or 3 ounces of mixture back into cup A. Of that 3 ounces, 2/3 of it or 2 ounces is cream.

Cup A 2 ounces coffee + 3 new ounces of which 2 ounces is cream and 1 ounce is coffee.
That means that 2 ounces out of the 5 ounces is cream, so 2/5 is cream. <== answer
Cup B 3 ounces of which 2 ounces are cream + 1 ounce is coffee

The answer is 2/5 of the 1st cup is cream.

I hope that helps!! :-)

1st cup: 4 ounces of coffee
2nd cup: 4 ounces of cream

transfer 1/2 (2 ounces) from the first cup to the second:
1st cup: 4ounces-2= 2 ounces coffee
2nd cup: 4 ounces cream + 2 ounces coffee= 6 ounces

transfer 1/2 liquid in the 2nd cup to the first cup:
2nd cup: 6 ounces-3 (1/2)= 3 ounces
1st cup: 2 ounces+ 3 ounces= 5 ounces

2/5 in the 1st cup is cream

after 1st transfer there is 2 onces of coffee in cup1 and 4 ouces of cream +2 ounces of coffee in second cup. So 2nd cup has 6 ounces of a mixture that has twic as much cream in it as coffee. 1/2 of this mixture thus is 3 ounces which contains 2 ounces of crean and 1 ounce of coffee.

When this is poured into the 1st cup we now have 5 ounces of which 3 are coffee and 2 are cream. 2/5 of the 1st cup are now cream.

Begins with:
1st cup, 4 oz coffee
2nd cup, 4 oz cream

Pours:
2 oz coffee from 1st cup to 2nd cup.

Now you have:
1st cup 2 oz coffee
2nd cup 6 oz total, 4 oz cream 2 oz coffee, 2/3 cream and 1/3 coffee

The pours:
half the liquid from 2nd cup to 1st cup
3 oz, 2/3 cream and 1/3 coffee, 2 oz cream and 1 oz coffee

End with:
1st cup 5 oz total 2+1 oz coffee and 0+2 oz cream
2nd cup 2 oz cream and 1 oz coffee

So the firs cup has 3 oz coffee and 2 oz cream, so it is 3/5 coffee and 2/5 cream.

the second cup now has 6 ounces (1/3 coffee)
pouring back into 1st cup 3 ounces (1 ounce coffee)
+ 2 ounces already there

Step 1 - 4 C | 4 Cr

Step 2 - 2C | 2C + 4Cr

Step 3 - 2C + 1C + 2Cr | 1C + 2 Cr

So the first cup has 3C and 2 Cr so the fraction of liquid in the first cup that is now cream is 2/5.

2/5's is cream 3/5's is coffee.

Hope this helps.

There's a couple of ways to look at it. First, do overall volume. A 3" cube has a volume of 27 cubic inches (3x3x3). Your prism has a volume of 1296 cu. ic. (9*6*24). 1296 / 27= 48 The other way to do it is by layers. The prism has a base of 6 x 9. So 6 cubes will fit. Now, keep stacking layers of 6 cubes until they're 24 inches tall. This will require 8 layers. 6 x 8 = 48
