It was a common snake, but represented all its species. Gilgamesh had acquired a magic plant from the bottom of the Ocean that could return youth to any who ate of it. The snake ate the whole plant.

Gilgamesh lost return to youth. The snake and all snakes shed their old skins for fresh new youthful skins, even today.
