I want to use Mobil1 (or any other fully synthetic), but I need an oil filter that will last 15-20, 000 km. Is K&N the only way to go for long lasting oil filters? How long can you run Mobil1 with a good filter; 15 000km?

they do not yet make an oil filter to last more than the normal 5k mile interval. If you plan on changing the oil every 15k miles then get the filter changed and add whatever oil needed to replace it every 5k miles. good luck wih this and I hope you do not have a newer car that is under warranty because they care what type of oil you use you still need to change it anywhere from 3k - 7500 miles for the warranty depending on the manufacturer.

One thing that you need to really understand is the filter's ability to remove particles of a certain size. Fram is one of the worst filters for particle size below 20-25 microns. They are some of the worst on the market. They are pretty poor filters based on scientific findings of removing particulate of "X" size. Filter efficiency is critical for long term engine health as is changing the oil on a regular basis. K&N puts out a decent filter as well as others. Fram is NOT one of them based on filtering efficiency and particle size. Honda and Toyota filters are some of the best in the business so far as factory available. Now if you have an american car this poses an issue with Hon and Toyo but if it is a Hon or Toyo then absolutely stick with the factory filters. When in doubt use the factory filter or find an aftermarket brand with published facts on its filter efficiency (higher percentages on smaller particle size is better) and buy that. Peoples personal opinions and urban legends are just that....take them with a grain of salt. Too many people who have no concept of the chemistry and materials that comprise these items but yet offer opinions which are not valid or scientifically based. Your driving style, rpm levels, engine speed, miles per year all play into the equation as well as many other factors like engine warm up, etc.

Mobil 1 makes a filter that has more filter surface area and lasts longer to match their oil. I see them everywhere that sells filters.
