x + y = 172

y = 5x-8

x + (5x-8) = 172

6x - 8 = 172

6x = 180

x = 30

y = 5x-8 = 5(30) - 8 = 150 - 8 = 142.

2007-10-05 19:25:44 · answer #4 · answered by mazdamandan 4 · 1 1

5x-8+5x=172
10x-8=172
10x-8+8=172+8
10x=180
10x/10=180/10
x=18

Check:

5x-8+5x=172
5(18)-8+5(18)=172
90-8+90=172
180-8=172
172=172

Thus, your first number is 5(18)-8=82.
Your second number is 5(18)=90.
