The Government isn't really "watching" but if they wanted to find OUT where you were traveling around the internet, it's very easy for them to do.... Police do it all the time---you supena the computer records from the particular server that the person uses and voila, your entire surfing history can be produced. However, the authorities ONLY do this if they are conducting an investigation and YOU are part of that investigation.... in order for the government to have someone watching the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of people who surf the net every day, they would have to hire too many people and it would totally bankrupt the government.

No, this is not true. There are over 300 million people in America, and prolly about 100 million who use the internet daily. They might monitor certain things, but they dont care about what you type in a search engine and what you are emailing your friend about.
They probably keep a check on certain websites and things that discuss different national security issues, but the government doesnt give a crap about anyone. Governments are created to be retarded and stupid :)

Who cares? Everything sent through the air is kept in a database in New Zealand by International accord. If this is true for the Internet as well, so what? Far as I'm concerned, you can even watch me on the pot, but no getting excited about this old man's grunts, hear?

They are alerted if certain words are used and then assess the wordage. If it is determined something 'bad', they keep an eye on you for a while.
If you live in China, then the government is regulating the whole internet and you face prosecution if you post anything outside of government regulations.

You know, if the governments biggest worry is my Internet surfing....I'd be pretty damned happy with that. My take on it is that you'd have to be doing something pretty shady to single yourself out of the hundreds of millions of Americans.
Privacy in the digital age is merely an illusion. *Anyone* who is determined enough can get all the info they want on you. The fact that any drooling lunatic can get a MAP to your front door (thanks, Google) concerns me far more than the govt.

it's probably not true that they are watching. it probably is true that they could find out everywhere you've been if they wanted to and put forth the effort.
