From your description, it sounds like a bulb of some type, but so many plants grow from bulbs. Lilies grow from bulbs and usually have long strappy leaves that come from the ground. A flower is your best way to id the plant.

your local county's master gardener, located in the county extension office, can help you out. you haven't told us what part of the country your from so it's pretty hard for anyone to tell from your description.

re: the horseradish answer... don't trust that. horseradish doesn't have long slender leaves.

iris, both wild and domestic, not to mention several sorts of yucca and aloe along with some purely 'green' plants match your description for most of the year.

in moderate climates there is a plant called the mystery lily which sends up flower stalks and leaves several months apart. (thus the mystery... one doesn't know where the flower came from if you didn't recognize the leaves a few months earlier)

Ok, you've got lanceolate leaves. Do they grow opposite or alternate? Compound or umbelate? In a rosette or recumbent? Best way to ID any plant is to let it bloom. Watch it grow, notice its habits, examine the seeds, identify the seedling. Dirt is good. a picture would help when words fail.

Mow it over and then mow it over again and again, and if it keeps growing back...it's horseradish. :) The baby leaves are delish in salads.
