My boyfriend and I were discussing lastnames and marriages and we've come up with three options:

My last name is McDowall his is Roberts

1. We go by McDowall-Roberts
2. We go by McRoberts
3. He goes by Roberts and I go by McDowall-Roberts

Which do you all think?

I don't "just wanna take Roberts" because I like my lastname and will feel like I'm dishonouring my family name by dropping it.

Any children that we will have will take his lastname (Roberts) unless we choose to go with McRoberts.

If some of you had not noticed, just taking Roberts is NOT an option I am willing to make.

I don't think you can just change both your names to McRoberts, but I am not sure. I think McDowell-Roberts is nice - and he can keep Roberts. Good for you for not "just wanting to take his name" - I think that says alot for you and your love of your family.

Hyphenated names have always amused me.
I always wonder what a child of the union would do if they met a hyphenated name and had a kid - would that kid have four hyphenated names? ... and if they got married to another hyphenated name ... now I'm just being silly.

Why don't you just keep your Ms McDowall name and he stays with Roberts?
It's no big deal - I'm glad you're thinking progeny takes his name - don't bastardise his name - it makes genealogy a hassle.

Did your mother feel she was dishonouring her name?
Changing names must be a PITA.

How about Roberts-McDowall? Or was that not an option? You and your boyfriend need to decide....not people on yahoo
