Buy a Tshirt that says "Happy Birthday" or "I Love You" or some such sentiment, or a picture of a piece of art. Meet him at the door wearing ONLY the Tshirt. Or, there is a great picture you could buy him titled "Expose Yourself To Art" and shows a man flashing a statue (seen from the rear of the man). It is usually available in places like college book stores or art stores around campuses. I know it is on Amazon, but may not be able to get it in time.

Artsy/philosopher... I suppose that means he's a man of aesthetics and romance? Assuming he is, what I would do, is arrange a nice dinner at home or in town, maybe go see a museum/art gallery or something, and take a walk at night somewhere pretty. A forest, or a river, maybe a pretty part of downtown.

there is also this really good collection of books called cream, whipped cream, icecream etc. they are huge art books on contmepory artists and are fantastic.
