I recently hung (with great pride) my UCLA flag from my window in my apartment. Now the apartment manager is telling me I cant have it hanging. I dont see why not if its not controversial in any way. Its hanging from the inside of my window and it is not "cluttering" or damaging the appearance of the unit. Can they make me put it down just because they want me to?

Yeah, lots of leases have a clause about outer displays. The apartment building looks nicer from the outside if it looks uniform. It also keeps people from storing dead appliances and other crap on their balconies and making the whole building look ghetto. Besides it might look nice now, but after a few months of hanging in the hot California sun, that flag would look a little raggedy and faded. You might have the good sense to take it down on your own, but other people have to be told.

I'd take the flag out of the window and hang it on the wall. Save it from getting sun faded.

They probably discourage hanging flags in the window because someone hung a controversial flag and it's just easier to outlaw all flags.

Also, I used to live in an apartment in a historical building and the curtains available to the outside where severley limited.

In california, this oculd happen for lots of reasons besides that:

- Gang affiliations
- neighborhood rules about whatis aloowed and not allowed
- condo rules

and so on....

Yes, they can. "Cluttering" is very subjective.
