They lowered the age to 18 when I was 18 as a matter of fact. The number of alcohol related deaths rose dramatically in the 18-21 age group. When I turned 22, it went back to 21. More kids today drive and so I would say that hell will freeze over before you see it lowered again.

It's been taught that our brains don't really mature until the age 25.
With your question, I have seen allot of underage drinking incidents to include death.
No matter what age it's set people will break the law and drink.
Let's turn the question into how do we teach them to drink responsibly?
But if we could get the law change, I use to think that 20 was ok to start out, I also recall the topic of 18 because the age he/she can sign a contract for the armed forces without their parents consent.
Since we have more teens driving and living like there's no tomorrow we best keep it to 21 and hope and pray they catch on to the designated driver now.
I know I was one in high school.
Jess.

Setting the legal drinking age at 21 is wishful thinking. People who are 18, and especially those who are away from home for the first time drink. It's time we recognized reality. It used to be legal in many states to buy and drink 3.2 beer at 18, and everything else at 21. There were any number of bars catering to the 18 to 20 crowd. It seemed like a reasonable compromise.

I think bartenders are responsible enough to judge when enough is enough generally, without adding other laws. If someone's going to drink to excess in their own home, I don't see how their age or the legality of the situation is in any way relevant.
I do think the age limit's too high, but also that if a person turns out to be addicted to alcohol, they should be able to look back at a time in their life when they could cope socially without that prop, & without huge pressure to socialise and conform, & overspend. Really you are talking about making choices.
I see nothing wrong with having wine or beer with food, in company, even for young teenagers. I think people can be quite extreme about demanding strict restrictions for others.

honestly, i am 100 percent against drinking. alchohol should be banned altogether, however that would be impossible to do (they already tried to in the 30s), seriously, you never hear about people who got in a car crash when they were high (im not supporting drugs by saying this), but you always hear about drunk driving car accidents. Plus, although you are technically and adult when you are 18, you still arent mature untill your like 25, so i think that the age to drink should be raised.

it should be 18. there needs to be a legal cut-off age when one officially moves from minor to adult, and i think 18 is a good age for that. everybody should get full adult rights at 18, and if someone is too immature to handle the responsibility at that age, then they will just have to deal with the consequences of their actions. i was in the army and witnessed friends get busted for drinking at 18, 19, and 20. let me tell you it's ridiculous.
p.s. the "alcohol related death" stats are seriously skewed. they count an accident as alcohol related if a passenger had a swig of nyquil.

Lower it to 18. That year is the official entry into adulthood.
MADD will never let it happen. Hundreds of thousands of good people will continue to have criminal records for underage drinking.
