The properties are tricky because carbon has allotropes, meaning there are different forms with differing properties. Compare black coal, graphite and diamonds. They are all carbon with different properties.

For example, graphite is smooth and slippery with a black / grey color. It is compressible (formed into pencils and is easy to grind down.

Diamonds are hard and can shatter. It is translucent. It has a very high melting point.

Salt is NaCl or KCl. Salt is sodium potassium and chlorine. Salt is a chloride. Sugar is sucrose or fructose or glucose. Essentially a molecule with hydrogen and carbon. All normal Human beings (except dieticians and serial killers) would die without salt or sugar.
