i am looking into building a pc, i am interested in a video card that has 256mb DDR2. my motherboard is compatile with DDR RAM. will the video card be compatible since its not going into a ram slot, but rather a PCI-E slot?

What memory the video card uses is COMPLETELY UNRELATED to what memory your mainboard uses. They don't affect each other at all.

Any ram you add to your computer will speed up a lot of things, but if the video card only has 256 MBs max I'd think about getting a video card with at least 512 dedicated to it... It'll free up the rest of your ram from the video chip on the mobo and the price of DDR2 is so cheap right now (Around $30 per gig!) you could double your ram and get a new video card for around $150 and be glad that you did.

The ram on a video card is for the GPU on the card and has no connection with your system ram at all so yes, it will work fine.
