I like a comedian who will just work on life situations, like Bill Cosby or Bob Newhart. It is rich to use that material without hurting or demeaning another person....to say only what will help. Life has so many funny irregular things that happen, or can happen, the older I get, the more important it is that I be kind, and that I see kindness in those around me. Including a comedian who is performing---but not at the expense of others. Maybe I am getting more straightlaced with time, but I believe more and more with the incidences of violence and assault surrounding us, kindness is getting to be a rare commodity. And I choose to do my part. So, my answer is that I prefer the funny side of life in general without insults being used to further ones comedy career.

the fact that they can be quick on insult and make me laugh. Basically a mixture of both makes an even better comedian!

A good comedian talks about actual things that happen in life, that really annoy all of us, but we keep our mouths shut and "put up" with. For example; people standing in line at McDonalds. They look at the food selection for 5 minutes, then they get up to the front of the line, and then stand for another 5 minutes trying to figure out what to eat. Give me a break. As the comedian says "GET OUT OF THE LINE!!"

Light on the insults and heavy on life experiences. The best and most important attribute a comedian can possess is timing. Without that, they are nothing.

Good presentation, good material that makes us laugh at ourselves (not insulting) minimal usage of offensive language and not racist remarks. Off-colored inuendoes sprinkled in can be cool. Good examples: Red Skelton, Bill Cosby, Bob Hope, George Goebel, George Burns, Jeff Foxworthy, "Larry The Lineman" --- that kind.

That they can make you laugh with life experiences. Insulting people loses its flavor after a few minutes. Even Don Rickles turns his jokes to other things, like himself, after one or two jabs.

Someone who can do impressions, can speak clearly so you can understand them, someone who can tell jokes one after another etc
British comedian Mike Reid was a class act at doing that. Only thing I didn't like about him was when the crowd cheered after a joke he would get angry & start yelling "F***ing turn it in"
