It's tough to come up with only five, but I'll give it a shot.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens (It's his shortest novel, but I also LOVED A Tale of Two Cities; David Copperfield; Great Expectations; Our Mutual Friend; The Pickwick Papers and Nicholas Nickleby...among other works of his)
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maude Montgomery (This book stands alone, but I enjoy the entire series.)
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
(I would have included The Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis, but that's a 7-book series.)

I've read so many good books over the years, it's hard to remember all of them, much less name a "top 5." Well, here's five I really enjoyed, in no particular order:
Raise the Titanic by Clive Cussler
Bloodsucking Fiends by Christopher Moore
Chesapeake by James Michener
Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett
Fool on the Hill by Matt Ruff

The Coming of Dragons by A.J. Lake -- A REALLY good book! For fantasy lovers at least. And it's sequel--
The Book of the Sword by A.J. Lake. That's even better. The next book for this series is The Circle of Stone. But it's not out yet sadly.

My favourite book series were:
VC Andrews (gotta love those twisted drama with a little touch of incest involved)
Dan Brown's novels (discovering secret messages from Leonardo Da Vinci's artworks to uncovering conspiracies from the states)
Phillpa Gregory (takes you back to King Henry VIII's court and his famous 6 wives from Queen Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Anne of Cleeves to Katherine Howard. Read about the moment they entered the english court to the moment they were taken to the scaffold).
