I mean like is it adoptive son, or adopted son?

The correct terminology is adopted child and adoptive parents.

I think adoptive normally refers to those doing the adopting - the parents - whilst adopted refers to the child.

I would just say this is my son. (period) I have always wanted to adopt, and I do have kids "naturally"...someone asked me how I would explain to the "adopted" child, and I told them I would say...that that child came from my heart.
