If you are having a problem with cramping eating things to increase iron levels during that time by eating things like spinach, raisins, and peanut butter (if not allergic to peanuts of course) will help during that time.
For at night time have a thick towel (make sure it's one that is several years old) to help catch some of the flow if you find that your flow gets heavier during the night.
For pads, I would recommend Always (the one with the wings).
Also, to help you start seeing a pattern with your periods mark the days of your period on a calendar. It will also help in years later when you go for your physical and the doctor asks when the first day of your last period is (our periods also tell alot about our overall health so that if something does go wrong it can get caught early).
And also make a note of how old you are when you had your first period in a notebook or some other record keeping resource because as you get older whenever you go to the doctor one of the questions they will ask for is how old a woman was when she had her first period. If you remember the dates and number of days for your first period make a note of that because that information too may be important.

Keep a calendar that you can write on...mark the days that you actually bleed. You can keep track of your menstrual cycle that way and it helps to avoid embarrassing accidents! It works for me.
Also, if you carry a purse...keep some pads or tampons in there at all times. When you first start having periods, it helps to have peace of mind knowing you have something "just in case" you start your period in the middle of the afternoon or something.
Another thing, you can always carry a sweater to tie around your waist whenever you think you've had an accident...
Good luck...and "have a happy period" lol

Pads with wings, personal wipes (found in the same section as pads), hot water bottle for cramps, and a zip up make up bag to keep your pads in your backpack/locker/purse.
If you get clots larger than the size of a nickle, tell your mom and doctor. Put little stars on your calendar to keep track of your periods and how long they lasted.
If you have more questions, ask your mom or school nurse.

Wear darker under garment because when you leak it's not really noticable compared to tidy whities. Don't eat a lot. Watch what you eat because it causes cramps and bloating. So try to avoid lots of salt and sugar. That's all. But don't worry, you will get use to it then you will have your own preferences.
