John Steinbeck is great. You are moved by his books and you learn things from the point of view from a 'everyday' person in the 30s-40s of American history. Pearl S. Buck is good, Robert McAmmon is good also. Ayn Rand. John Irving is also one of my favorites..A Prayer for Owen Meaney is my favorite by him.

Katherine Mansfield's selected stories are excellent . Read 'Miss Brill', 'Somthing Childish but very Natural', 'The Fly' and 'The Garden Party'.

Clive Cussler, Shakespeare, James Michener. I've been a fan of theirs for many years, and I think about, read and/or refer to their stuff on a pretty regular basis.
