I have carpet glued to my basement floor. I need to remove the carpet so I can lay vinyl tile. I imagine the glue holding the carpet will leave residue that the self-adhesive vinyl floor tile isn't going to like. Can I coat it, can I sand it, or do I have to completely strip it? Any suggestions on a method for preparing the floor along with any recommended coatings or solvents would be helpful. Thanks!

After stripping off the top of the carpet by cutting the face every 2 ft the length of the room use a razor scraper not just a scrapper these come in a range of 4" to 12". Needless to say but the wider the more it cost but the size of the area should determine which to use. I have done a 12x17 area with a 4" in about an hour. The trick is to keep a sharp blade in the scrapper. This said the floor should be smooth enough to put tile over. I to am not a fan of self adhesive tile but if you use it be sure to use tile adhesive first applied with the flat side of trowel (edge with no teeth) to coat the floor like glazing then let dry and lay tile. Best to put down 1/4 of floor at a time.

Laying Vinyl Tile

A bit labor intensive but a Floor scraper initially might be an option. You'll probably get answers stating SOLVENTS; but I find that they only add to the mess and will add more effort.

Certainly you can rent a floor sander; but even at that you'll have areas you won't be able to access; IE: 90 degree corners. To SKIM the entire floor is IFFY. You'd have to pretty much have any substance FLOW OUT to smooth/level, and/or SCREED it. WAY intensive effort in any case.

You could bite the bullet and install a sub floor; if your basement is secure from moisture intrusion; then do the Vinyl tile.

With no offense meant at all; I'm NOT a fan of Vinyl tile; especially self stick; but certainly there are viable adhesives on the market to aid in the install process. For the self stick over decent substrate I use a water based contact cement on both the sub and the back of the peel and stick. For non stick I use a Trowel/knife notched at no more than 1/8, and often at 1/16.

Would be best to strip it bare. Get a dictionary and learn new curse words before you start, they will come in handy. If you run out of curse words and energy then consider coating it. PLAN B----strip the carpet only, leave the glue and build a new sub-floor over the concrete. Smoother surface, less work. Two of my favorite terms.

i assume the basement floor is cement if so paint thinner will help break it up, scrape it up, OK u could try to sand it down, i personally would go with the scraper they use to bring up vinyl floor
