Actually, another thing to consider are ATM's. A lot of holiday destinations have them and exchange rates for "money from the wall" can be interesting. Systems like cirrus can be used worldwide. Check this with your bank. Do note that debit and credit cards may have different charges for this.
When I travel I usually bring some money for direct use and emergencies and get the rest through ATMs. This is than backed up through traveller's checks.

You are better to take your cash with you and then convert in the country you are visiting; better rates.
We have done this three times now and have always got a better rate!

the post office have some good deals on at mo.
just had a better look, try thomson, they have an excellent exchange rate.

i was told post office or M and S r the best i used m&s twice, they were quick helpful and efficient.
