I have 3 kids who all have had croup. My doctor told me to take them outside if it was cool and humid (i.e. snowing), then to bring them in the house and run the shower with the bathroom door closed. If it isn't snowing, you can sit in front of the freezer. I know it sounds stupid, but it has worked every time for me. If your child gets really bad, you will have to take them to the ER and have a breathing treatment and maybe a steroid shot.
Good Luck! Croup can be scary!

If it is cold outside and damp, wrap the baby up and take them outside.
You can also steam up a bathroom, but that is hot and cold pampness is the best. If you have a cold mister that is good.
My son was hospitalized for several days with croup so bad that he was in an oxygen tent. I will give you things to watch for when croup is bad enough to get to the ER
If your child's lips get very pale or even bluish.
Sternal or clavical retraction..... Watch your childs breathing just below the chest bone (bottom part of bone that the ribs are connected to) if that is being sucked in-- that is a symptom that breathing is very difficult. Collar bones on both sides appear to be sunk in when inhaling. Get to the ER or call 911 quick.
I have spent nights sleeping in my rocker while holding the child once they are sleeping. Your little one needs to be watched carefully.
You need to get advice from the baby's doctor. Ask questions so that you are sure how to care for the baby/child.
All three of my children had croup. Only one had to be hospitalized.

My son was 8 months old when he got croup. They gave him a steroid shot to help with the cough and that did help for a bit. Hot steam in the bathroom at night happened quite a bit at our house and humidifier in his room as well. It eventually turned into a cold and we still have the cold and cough from that 4 weeks later.
Just watch it very closely and make sure their breathing is good, no wheezing or signs of difficulty in breathing. Check back with your doctor in a couple days if the coughing doesn't start to improve after your first visit.
